Administering Security

When network administrators establish user accounts, each account typically require a user name and password to access, or log on, to the network.

A user name, or user ID, is a unique combination of characters, such as letters of alphabet or numbers, that identifies one specific user.

A password is a combination of characters associated with the user name that allows access to certain computer resources.

Active Directory (AD) is a feature of Windows 2000 Server that allows network administrators to manage all network information including users, devices, settings, and connections from a central environment -- even if computers of the network are not located in the same physical areas.
